Which documents do I need to apply for Turkish citizenship by descent or through emigration?
Below is the list of documents which our clients are often asked for when applying for Turkish citizenship by descent. We encourage you to contact your local Turkish Embassy or Consulate for advice as requirements do sometimes change.
If your documents are in English, then they will all need to be translated by an official translator into Turkish. We can help translate your documents for you!
All official Australian or New Zealand documents must have an Apostille stamp on them. An Apostille stamp verifies that your document is an official document and the contents of the document are true – only the Australian or New Zealand government can provide this stamp.
All Apostille stamps should be obtained before you send us your documents for translating – as this must be translated into Turkish.
Australia: You can organise an Apostille stamp by contacting Notarial Services via this link and by booking an appointment or sending them your document in the post.
New Zealand: You can organise an Apostille stamp by contacting the New Zealand authorities via this link.

Steps to Apply for Turkish Citizenship by Descent in Australia or New Zealand
If your parents are Turkish, then you may be eligible to apply for Turkish citizenship under Turkish Citizenship Act!
Step One: Obtain relevant documentation
You will need to gather all of the relevant documents below in order to support your citizenship application.
BIRTH CERTIFICATE WITH APOSTILLE STAMP – TRANSLATED
You will need an original Australian or New Zealand birth certificate with an apostille stamp affixed to the back of it. Both documents must be translated into Turkish by an official certified Turkish translator.
MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE WITH APOSTILLE STAMP – TRANSLATED
If applicable, you will need an original Australian or New Zealand marriage certificate issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages, with an apostille stamp affixed to it.
Both the marriage certificate and the apostille stamp must be translated into Turkish by an official certified Turkish translator.
PARENTS’ MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE WITH APOSTILLE STAMP – TRANSLATED
Marriage certificate of your parents (it is necessary to establish the family connection chain).
If applicable, an original divorce decree absolute with Turkish translation is also required.
CERTIFIED COPY OF YOUR ID
You will need to present a Certified Copy of a valid Australia, New Zealand or other passport or Certificate of Citizenship to prove which country you are currently a citizen of.
All of the information on this document must match the names in the birth and marriage certificates as well as other supporting documents.
CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK – TRANSLATED
You will need a Criminal Record Check, which is typically a National Police Certificate issued by the AFP (if from Australia, see link here) or a Criminal Record Check from the Ministry of Justice (if from New Zealand, see link here).
This will need to then have an Apostille stamp affixed to it and both the Police Check and Apostille translated into Turkish by an official certified Turkish translator.
This document must not be older than 6 months from the date of issue.
If you were not born in Australia or New Zealand, then you will also need a second Criminal Record Check from the country of your birth. This is also to be Apostilled and translated into Turkish by an official certified Turkish translator.
PROOF OF PARENT’S TURKISH CITIZENSHIP
You will need to provide proof that your parent is a Turkish citizen. Applicants must demonstrate direct lineage to a Turkish citizen parent using validated documentation.
This must be in the form of a Certified Copy of a valid Turkish passport, Turkish Identity Card or original Turkish Birth Certificate.
These copies must be certified by a Justice of the Peace or Notary Public.
As they will already be in Turkish, they do not need to be translated.
ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION FOR ESTABLISHING LINEAGE
To be able to apply for Turkish citizenship by descent, you must prove the bloodline first. Here are the required birth and/or death certificates, marriage certificates, and other documents that certify family relationships with Turkish citizens.
If your Turkish parent is deceased, you may need to provide:
- Death certificate of the Turkish parent (with apostille and Turkish translation)
- Marriage certificate of your parents (with apostille and Turkish translation)
- Additional civil registration documents to establish the family connection
MEDICAL CERTIFICATE – TRANSLATED
A health certificate from an approved doctor stating that you pose no risk to public health may be required. This should be obtained from a recognised medical practitioner and translated into Turkish.
PROOF OF ADDRESS
You will need to provide current residential address verification in Australia or New Zealand. This can be in the form of utility bills, bank statements, or other official documents showing your current address.
For Parents Applying With Children Under 18
If you are applying for Turkish citizenship for your children as well, you will need to additionally provide the following documents for each child:
ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE – TRANSLATED
The birth certificate must clearly show both parents’ full names and must be authenticated with an apostille stamp if born in Australia or New Zealand. Both the birth certificate and the apostille stamp must be translated into Turkish by a NAATI-certified Turkish translator.
PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP
If available, provide the child’s current Australian passport or alternative identity document.
PARENTAL CONSENT REQUIREMENTS
The consent requirements depend on your specific situation:
- If both parents are applying together: Some consulates may still request a formal parental consent document, so it’s advisable to check with your relevant Turkish diplomatic mission.
- If only one parent is applying: A notarised parental consent letter is required from the non-applying parent, allowing the child to acquire Turkish citizenship. This consent must be in written form, notarised, and translated into Turkish if issued outside of Turkey.

Step Two: Complete the Application Form
Contact your nearest Turkish Embassy or Consulate listed below to obtain the current Turkish citizenship application forms. Application forms and requirements may vary and are subject to change, so it’s essential to get the most up-to-date forms directly from Turkish authorities.
For Turkish citizenship by descent, you’ll need to complete the official Turkish citizenship application form (see link here: VAT-3: Türk Vatandaşlığının Genel Olarak Kazanılması Başvuru Formu).
All application forms are available directly from the Turkish Ministry of Interior’s Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs website here.
The forms will need to be completed in Turkish. If you need assistance with translation, we can help translate and complete the forms for you.
Step Three: Pay Consular Fees and Submit Documents
Pay the required consular fees as specified by the Turkish Embassy or Consulate. Fee schedules can be found on the respective Turkish Embassy/Consulate websites.
Submit all required documents, translations, and fees to the appropriate Turkish diplomatic mission according to their specified procedures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Although it may seem daunting at first, applying for Turkish citizenship is a fairly straightforward process for most. Here are some of the questions which we commonly get asked by our clients.

Do I need a lawyer or migration service?
No! Most our clients apply for citizenship on their own without engaging any lawyers or citizenship services. It is entirely possible, and cheaper, to follow the steps on the Turkish government website and apply on your own.
How do I get the required documents?
You can ask family in Turkey, or email/call civil registry offices in Turkey yourself and request that they provide official documents such as birth certificates from your ancestors.
Do I need paper or digital translations?
The Turkish Embassy seems to prefer printed and ‘wet stamped’ certified translations, so we always mail copies out to clients when we know that they are applying for Turkish citizenship.
